Nihilus 06:12
Born is the path to nowhere that drags us by the throat. Dead is a search for purpose, dissolving in ash. Kill your beliefs. Damned unrelieved. Soaking in grief. Feel no release. (x2) And hence from out of the brume a voice echoed with presence: “All you see and all you feel, is all you’ll be and all that’s real. All your hopes will crumble thin, and all your light will tumble dim.” And from her departure came the prophetic loss of all things lucent. Gone was the will to see past the limits of the vacuum. Cursed to wander through the barren lands of nothingness, in search of something beyond the dusk.

Blood Moon 07:10
Pry open the book of Joel and read aloud to me. Speak, oh prophet of doom, of my lonesome jubilee: - On the first moon the mist of doubt shall seep into thy weary eyes and clutch thy reasoning with the firmest of grips. - On the second moon thy porcelain heart shall be broken in twain, the two pieces’ ties severed hopelessly apart. Pry open the book of Joel and read aloud to me. Speak, oh prophet of doom, of my lonesome jubilee: - On the third moon thy body shall bear the strain of thy feeble lucidity and coil in the shackles of slumber. - On the fourth moon thy spirit shall be set ablaze by fire and brimstone until thy burnt faith is but embers. - And on the fifth moon you shall behold the sixth seal’s opening, and lo, the sun shall become as black as sackcloth of hair. Behold the six seal and lo the sun shall become and black as night and the moon shall become as blood before the day Nihilus returns. And alas, she did.
3.
Upon the furious blaze of the fourth moon, I came to witness visions of those who carved their mark and left wordlessly. From beyond those pitch black horizons I could still hear the echoes of their distant voices, resonating. Kindred spirits gone rogue embellishing someone else’s ether (but not mine). In the fire I learned the distance’s true teachings: Each fractured bond prompts the acceptance of our ephemeral stay. From then onward detachment became rule, each passenger exhausting their time of permanence. And I, doused in ire and wrath, pushing their presence further away until it turned to absence. You who turned your backs in utter indifference. Shall your dark be lighter than mine, I’ll never know. We shall die alone. In time so do us all.
4.
Act I: Contemplating The Void: It took the night to delve into the darkest corners of my being | I watched the dawn surrender mute to the twilight’s impending fall, and the cold taking over the air | A reflected black hole straight ahead inviting me over for a talk at its deepest abyss, like a neighbor sharing his misfortunes, so as not to feel so lonely anymore | and though any common man would decline politely and turn back around, I felt no grip from behind my back pulling me far from the cold dark space ahead. You have your heart’s bleak prose to tell these oldest of ears | In them you can confide your innermost nature and thoughts. And once you do, I will be yours. Like no one ever was. I am home to all lost wonderers. The ground beneath the callous feet, sweeping them to a rest everlasting when they are feeble and weary | I am the most faithful of mistresses, rendering your earthly concerns obsolete. Shall you entrust your woe onto me, and I shall harbor your every fragment deep inside my marrow. Act II: Cosmic Migration: It would only take a leap of lost faith to carry on to the black hole’s arms, and Nihilus’s embrace. And so from out the mud I plunged abandoned to the cold darkness ahead. I saw millions of lost wanderers, side by side, floating towards the promised land of nothing. Each to their fortress of solitude, slipping further and further away into a vacuum so deep no one would ever retrieve you. I was now proudly alone. (x2) Act III: Lost Amongst The Stars: (Instrumental) Act IV: The Reckoning: Transient pilgrim, I drew forth my last of lights to guide me through the dark matter and specks of dust that cloud my acumen. And on the brink of consummate abandon, I came upon a sullen haven from a lost reverie. Dark, unblemished, putrid. Home to the homeless; parent to the orphan; warmth to the stranded. Settled in fatigue, I reckoned many a truths beneath the pending icicles, of which none but one I shall disclose in this contrition: that our bodies shall equally rot and feed the worms, and neither the firmest of beliefs can refuse such objectivism. Our deeds slipping away from collective memory, giving way to new ones, to vanish soon after as well. Nihilus held the sharpest truth. Resign to her teachings… stargaze one last time… weak pulse… no more laments. Only eulogies. It’s only a rite of passage. It’s only a rite of passage. It’s only a rite of passage. It’s only a rite of passage. Farewell.
5.
Hail Death, my master. In thy hands I command my spirit. Oh, bless me with thy wisdom and bring about our tombs. I pledge allegiance to thy grim future, for I know life is fleeting. And in denial the servants of light shall see their hopes sinking in reality. Rise, untethered pupil. Embody the darkness’s calling and plague the cosmos with truth. Whisper howls of ruin and despair and grow the seeds of meaninglessness within their hearts. Any man who attempts to see past mortality shall be made an example of with sudden termination. Naysayers, reachers and believers all shall see you on their deathbed and consumed by the emptiness of their passing. Yes Lord, thy will is mine to carry onward forever. In death, purpose found in purpose obliterated. Darkness permeating aureate realms, in time to blackout forever. The end is nigh for us, rejoice with me, rejoice with me! THERE IS A FINAL DESTINATION: WE WALK ALL OVER IT EVERYDAY!

about

"What is to give light must endure burning" - Viktor Frankl

"Cursed to wander through the barren lands of nothingness in search of something beyond the dusk" - Spiralist, "Nihilus"

The artist's journey is often sparked by the worst circumstances begging for urgent release. Spiralist was born out of such circumstances: as a result of the slow death of his former band and years of experiences with depression and increasing bouts of anger, Bruno Costa locked himself inside his small apartment in Porto, Portugal, for two weeks to exorcise it all, building the backbone of an album that would take up all his focus from then onward: "The album was initially conceived as mere therapy, but the more of myself that I poured into it, the more it grew in emotional importance... it became absolutely necessary not just artistically, but for the sake of my sanity as well. I think it saved me, in many ways"

Written, recorded, mixed and mastered by Spiralist himself, "Nihilus", his debut album, tells the story of an unnamed character who is gradually corrupted by the album's eponymous entity on a physical, psychological and even moral level, in a metaphorical tale which mirrors the effects of depression itself. Sonically, the album is as much of a grim ride as its lyrical concept, evenly employing both heaviness and atmosphere with elements from Black Metal, Doom, Hardcore Punk and Ambient. The title-track opens the album with a sinister crescendo that creeps up slowly until culminating in furious instrumentation and screaming, only to continuously transition into a mournful depiction of the loss of one's inner light. "Blood Moon" converts a biblical prophecy into a poetic description of the corrosive effects of depression on all levels, while "The Fires Of Confession" laments the desintegration of relationships that were once meaningful. The 15-minute plus behemoth that is "Black Hole Man" goes from Post-Rock meets Spoken Word to Post-Metal, into Progressive Metal, into Trance Rock, into synth ambience, all in one cohesive package of disorienting twists and turns. At last, "The Deepest Abyss" details the final, irreversible surrender of one to darkness, in a funereal dirge of doom and gloom, and ending on a pessimistic note: "There is a final destination: we walk all over it everyday!"

Despite a pure "Do It Yourself" approach to album's musicalconception, "Nihilus" is complemented by artwork by Joel Costa, Spiralist's father, freely projecting his interpretation of the album into a canvas. The album's multimedia components were also created by the team Mestria (consisting of André Constante Carvalho and Alexandra Santos) and Jéssica Barros.

In the end, however, "Nihilus" is all about release and healing through venting with emotional honesty and bravery. "I've always had a tendency to shut myself off from the world around me, to the point of having to spend about 10 years in psychologists when I was a child and a teenager... I quit that and the medication I had around the time I wholeheartedly gave myself into my music, and I've never looked back. I'm not saying you should do it as well... but I've found that I communicate better through making music. And becoming Spiralist, as well as writting "Nihilus", has turned into a process of myself coming into my own both artistically and personally"
